Excavator and bulldozer simulator

Culenz's excavator and bulldozer simulators train heavy-equipment operators for mining, construction and infrastructure. Operators practise digging, trenching, loading and grading on virtual sites before using real machines.

01 — Overview

Simulation for heavy-equipment operators

Excavators and bulldozers are expensive to run and costly to damage. New operators also put nearby workers and buried services at risk.

Training on real machines uses fuel, wears parts and takes machines off productive work. It also limits how much practice each trainee gets.

An excavator and bulldozer simulator lets operators build core skills first. They then spend real-machine time refining what they already know.

02 — What's included

Skills operators practise

  • Core tasks

Trenching, truck loading, grading and slope work, each scored on accuracy and time.

  • No fuel or wear

Early practice happens without fuel use or wear on real machines.

  • Site hazards

Power lines, buried services, unstable ground and nearby workers, all safe to practise.

  • Trainer dashboard

Trainers compare operators and repeat the tasks each person finds hardest.

03 — Key features

Excavator simulator in depth

  1. 01

    Excavator exercises

Operators practise trenching, digging to depth, truck loading and slope work. Each exercise is scored for accuracy, time and smooth control.

Exercises build from basic bucket control to full tasks. Operators learn to coordinate the boom, arm, bucket and swing together.

  2. 02

    Bulldozer exercises

Operators practise pushing material, grading to level and cutting slopes. The simulator shows the finished surface against the target grade.

Exercises also cover safe travel on slopes and around other machines. Operators learn how blade angle and speed affect the result.

  3. 03

    Site hazards and safety

Scenarios include power lines, buried services, unstable ground, trench edges and nearby workers. Operators must spot and avoid each hazard.

Mistakes such as striking a buried cable are shown with their consequences. Operators learn why pre-work checks and spotters matter.

  4. 04

    Seat, controls and motion

The simulator uses a seat with joysticks and pedals laid out like the machine. Operators build the right hand and foot movements.

An optional motion platform adds tilt and bumps. That helps operators feel how the machine reacts on uneven ground.

  5. 05

    Trainer tools

Trainers set exercises, watch each run and compare operators on one dashboard. They can repeat the tasks each operator finds hardest.

Records show practice hours and scores for every trainee. That supports training records for employers and skill programmes.

  6. 06

Common mistakes the excavator and bulldozer simulator catches

New operators often over-dig, swing the bucket too fast or work too close to a trench edge. Bulldozer trainees often cut below grade or miss the slope angle.

The simulator scores each task against the target and shows the finished surface. Operators repeat the task until they reach the required accuracy.

  7. 07

    Pairs well with this simulator

Mining and construction teams often pair the simulator with the Culenz hazard identification and permit to work modules. Operators learn site rules as well as machine skills.

Crews near buried services should also take the confined space module, which covers trench hazards and gas.

  8. 08

Hardware for the excavator and bulldozer simulator

Most Culenz simulators run on standalone headsets such as Meta Quest 3, with no PC or cables. Some add replica tools or controls where muscle memory matters.

Where the task needs a seat, joystick or full-size tool, we supply a training station built for daily use. Every station is tested with your trainers before handover.

We advise on how many stations you need from your batch sizes and training hours. Spare headsets and controllers keep sessions running if a device fails.

  9. 09

    Scores, records and your LMS

Every attempt is logged with the trainee's name, exercise, score, time and errors. Trainers see each trainee's progress on one dashboard.

Records export to your LMS through SCORM or xAPI, or as a spreadsheet for audits and funding reports. That gives skill councils and employers evidence of practice hours.

Group reports show which exercises most trainees find hard. Trainers can then spend more workshop time on those skills.

04 — Our process

Rolling out simulators across centres

Many organisations start with one centre or one batch as a pilot. That tests timetables, storage and trainer routines before a wider rollout.

Standalone headsets travel easily between centres and need little IT support. Our SafeSim Uno platform updates every device and collects records in one place.

We train your trainers to run sessions and look after the equipment. They then teach new batches without needing Culenz on site.

  1. 01

    Scope with your team

We agree tasks, trainees, sites and success measures with your EHS or training leads.

  2. 02

    Script and storyboard

Your experts approve every step, hazard and score before the build starts.

  3. 03

    Build and test

We build the module, test it on the headset and review it with your trainers.

  4. 04

    Pilot

One group or site trains first, and we review the results together.

  5. 05

    Roll out and support

Headsets, records and refresher content are rolled out across your sites, with maintenance.

05 — Planning your project

Choosing the right partner

Checklist

Buying checklist for your excavator and bulldozer simulator

  • Ask which exercises are included and whether they match your syllabus or job tasks. Check that scores measure the skills your assessors care about.
  • Ask how records export to your LMS, and who updates content when your equipment or procedures change. Confirm how quickly faults are fixed.
  • Finally, try it yourself with a trainer and a trainee. A short demo shows whether the controls and feedback feel right for your learners.

06 — Why Culenz

Culenz as your VR simulator partner

Culenz is a virtual reality company with offices across India and Dubai. We build VR training simulators for institutes, employers and government programmes.

One team scopes the excavator and bulldozer simulator with your trainers, builds it, installs it and supports it. An annual maintenance contract covers repairs, spares and content updates.

Quotes list content, hardware and support separately. You see exactly what each part costs before you commit.

07 — FAQs

Questions buyers often ask

What does a heavy-equipment simulator need?

A seat with joysticks and pedals laid out like the machine, a display or headset, and the software. A motion platform adds the feel of tilting and bumps. Culenz recommends a setup during scoping, based on your machines and training numbers.

Which machines can the simulator model?

We can model hydraulic excavators and crawler bulldozers, with control layouts set to match common machine types. Other machines, such as wheel loaders or backhoe loaders, can be added during scoping.

Who uses excavator and bulldozer simulators?

Construction companies, mining firms, infrastructure contractors, equipment dealers and training institutes. Any organisation training new operators benefits, because early practice moves off expensive machines and away from live sites. Experienced operators also use it to refresh skills on new models.

Does simulator training count towards an operator licence?

Licensing rules vary by country and employer. Simulator hours usually support training but don't replace practical assessment on a real machine. We map simulator exercises to the requirements your programme follows.
