VR safety training for energy

Culenz builds VR safety training and heavy-equipment simulators for oil, gas, energy and mining operations. Crews rehearse gas releases, confined-space entry and permit procedures that can't be practised for real.

01 — Overview

VR training for energy teams

Gas releases, fires and confined-space emergencies can't be rehearsed for real. Yet crews must respond correctly in seconds.

Remote sites also make classroom training expensive and hard to schedule. VR brings realistic drills to the crew, wherever they work.

02 — What's included

Services for energy and mining teams

  • Gas and H2S response

Detector alarms, upwind escape and breathing apparatus, rehearsed in VR.

  • Confined spaces

Gas testing order, permits and standby duties.

  • Permit to work

Issuing, accepting and closing permits for high-risk jobs.

  • Heavy equipment

Excavator and dozer simulators for mine and site operators.

03 — Key features

Energy and mining XR in depth

  1. 01

    Gas leak and H2S response

Workers read gas detectors, choose a crosswind escape route and put on breathing apparatus in a virtual plant. Wind direction changes between attempts.

Each response is scored for speed and accuracy, so supervisors see who is ready.

  2. 02

    Confined space entry

Crews practise gas testing order, isolation checks and the attendant role for tanks, vessels and pits.

Non-entry rescue is rehearsed too, because untrained rescuers are often the second casualty.

  3. 03

    Permit to work and isolation

Issuers, receivers and area authorities practise permits, isolations and shift handovers. Conflicting permits and changing conditions test their judgment.

Lockout/tagout and electrical isolation modules complete the picture.

  4. 04

    Heavy equipment simulators

Excavator and bulldozer simulators train mine and site operators before they use real machines. Operators practise digging, loading and grading.

Hazards such as unstable ground and nearby workers are safe to practise.

  5. 05

Digital twins of plants and sites

A digital twin of a plant, platform or mine shows equipment, layout and data on one model. Teams plan maintenance and brief contractors on it.

New staff learn the layout in VR before their first site visit.

  6. 06

    Training at remote sites

Standalone headsets run without cables or a PC and travel easily to remote camps. Records sync when the headsets reconnect.

That keeps training consistent across offshore, onshore and remote locations.

  7. 07

    Built for your site

Scenarios can be built from your own plant drawings, detectors and muster points. Crews learn their real routes and hazards.

Your HSE team reviews every step against site procedures before release.

  8. 08

Choosing between VR, AR, holograms and 360°

Virtual reality suits deep, one-person experiences, such as a walkthrough or a training drill. Augmented reality suits phones and real spaces.

Holograms and projection reach crowds with no headset. A 360° live stream reaches people who can't attend in person.

On the scoping call, we recommend one format and explain the trade-offs. If a simpler option works better, we say so.

  9. 09

Measuring results in energy and mining

Agree what success means before the project starts, such as bookings, training scores, visitor numbers or time saved. Then measure the same figure before and after.

Our experiences can log sessions, scores, leads and usage. That data sits alongside your own business figures.

A short review after launch compares results with the goal. It also shows what to change in the next phase.

  10. 10

    Languages, accessibility and comfort

Voice-over and on-screen text can be produced in English, Hindi, Arabic or the other languages your audience uses. We agree the languages at scoping.

Experiences are designed for first-time users, with clear prompts and seated options where needed. We test comfort with real users before launch.

Holograms, projection and screen versions serve people who can't or prefer not to wear a headset.

  11. 11

    Hardware, support and maintenance

Culenz can supply headsets, hologram boxes, screens, cameras and simulator stations, tested together before delivery. You can also use suitable hardware you already own.

Annual maintenance contracts cover preventive visits, repairs, spares and content updates. Response times are written into the contract.

04 — Our process

Working with energy and mining teams

Every project starts with a free scoping call about your goal, audience, sites and timeline. You then receive a written scope with dated milestones and fixed deliverables.

You review the work in the headset or on site at each stage. Changes are made early, when they cost the least.

After launch, our crew runs the experience or hands it over with training. An annual maintenance contract keeps it running.

  1. 01

    Scope

We agree goals, audience, venue, devices and dated milestones, and you sign off the scope.

  2. 02

    Capture and storyboard

We gather plans, photos or scans and build a draft for you to review in the headset or on screen.

  3. 03

    Build

Final models, content and interactions are added and tested on the target device.

  4. 04

    Integrate and rehearse

Hardware is wired in, and the experience is rehearsed at the venue or a mock-up.

  5. 05

    Run and support

Our crew runs it or hands it over, followed by a review and a maintenance plan.

05 — Planning your project

Choosing the right partner

Checklist

Planning checklist for energy and mining projects

  • What decision or behaviour should the experience change, and how will you measure it? A clear answer keeps the project focused.
  • Who will use it, where, and on which devices? Who on your side will review content and sign off each stage?
  • Finally, who will run and maintain it after launch? Planning that early avoids an experience that stops working after a few months.

07 — FAQs

Questions buyers often ask

Why do oil and gas sites use VR training?

Emergencies such as gas releases can't be rehearsed for real, and remote sites make classroom training expensive. VR brings realistic drills to the crew. Records then show who has practised each scenario and who needs more time.

Which energy and mining scenarios can VR cover?

Common scenarios include gas releases, H2S, confined spaces, hot work, permits, lockout/tagout, work at height and heavy equipment. We build scenarios around your site's highest risks and incident history. Trainers can add new scenarios as risks change.

Can VR training work offshore or at remote camps?

Yes. Standalone headsets need no PC or cables and work without a live internet connection. Results sync when the devices reconnect, so remote crews train on the same content as everyone else.

Does VR training meet industry standards?

Modules are scripted from your procedures and can refer to recognised standards. VR records support your training files, but required certifications and practical assessments still apply. Your HSE team decides how VR fits your training matrix.
